Vol. I Issue. XIII

Pakistan’s strategy India-centric: Gen Kayani

Rawalpindi: Daily Jasarat, February 4, 2010. Army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani told media persons that Pakistan was not unmindful of the threat posed by Indian Army’s Cold Start doctrine. At the same time, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defeating terrorism and reminded the media that while NATO sustained 1582 casualties in the last eight years, Pakistan lost 2273 soldiers in 2009 alone. Besides, 73 intelligence officials were killed in Pakistan and 11 in Afghanistan. Gen Kayani cautioned against another operation in North Waziristan as rehabilitating 300,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from South Waziristan was yet to be carried out. He also laid out the importance of public mandate and media support for further successes against insurgents.

India’s two-front war scenario wishful thinking

Islamabad: Deen Islam.Com, February 03, 2010. Indian Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor’s claim that his army was prepared to fight on two fronts was based more on optimism than cold facts, according to strategic analyst Safeer Ahmad Siddiqui. He cited examples of India’s previous war with China in 1962 when India suffered its most humiliating defeat. During India’s only conflict with China, it had to resort to United States’ help in dissuading Pakistan from opening another front against India. John F Kennedy is believed to have asked General Ayub Khan not to ’stab India in the back’. He also said that China and Pakistan, if required, could well cooperate in a future conflict against India, effectively opening a 450 kms long front in northern India.

He also said that the Taliban could not be split by monetary incentives.Recounting previous defeats of Britain and the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan, Zardari urged the international community find a solution in Afghanistan and prevent an impending civil war.

Islamabad: Daily Ausaf, February 03, 2010. India continues to send large quantities of consumer items to ISAF forces in Afghanistan. An Indian bus carrying consumer goods was stopped at the national highway on February 8. Transport of Indian goods was earlier permitted by former President Gen Musharraf, but now has been discontinued.
